Objetivo THE CENTRE FOR BIO-INFORMATICS WILL PROVIDE AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE IN THE FIELD OF NUCLEIC ACID AND PROTEIN SEQUENCE DATABASE ANALYSIS FOR THE WHOLE BIOTECHNOLOGY COMMUNITY IN IRELAND. BOTH ACADEMIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS SERVICE. It is now established that software holds the key to the success or the failure of international sequencing projects. In this context, work is being carried out in order to create the tools to help biologists in the analysis of structure and functions of each gene or group of genes.Research involves the conception and implementation in an intelligent workstation of a computing environment which handles biosequences: access to databases, access to sequence analysis and learning software, display of sequences and results, communications with other computers and laboratories. The design of the architecture of the system, BIOSTATION, in flexible and evolutive modules is being developed. 3 versions were written for the 1-dimensional, 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional display of sequences and analysis results. Realization and test of a prototype was carried out on a personal computer (PC). Extensive use has been made of the database software ACNUC and a program, CLUSTAL, was written for aligning many sequences. Also, CLUSTAL, portability of the system in OS/2 and UNIX operating systems have been linked.A working methodology in design and realization of software for the computing of genomic sequence and the study of protein folding have been achieved. The first industrial exploitation of this work will be the diffusion of a commercial version BIOSTATION by a European company, GENOMIC, in 1991. A multiple sequence aligment program, CLUSTAL, was designed for microcomputer use. CLUSTAL is capable of aligning up to 100 sequences of 1200 residues each. This software has been distributed to 150 locations worldwide.AN ONLINE NUCLEIC ACID AND PROTEIN EXPECTED BENEFITS THE SEQUENCE DATABASE ANALYSIS SERVICE WILL BE DEVELOPED. THE INITIAL BASIS WILL BE THE ACNUC DATABASE AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM. THE QUALITY OF THE SERVICE WILL BE OPTIMIZED BY MAXIMISING (1) THE ACCESSIBILITY, AND (2) THE APPROPRIATENESS OF SOFTWARE. POINTS (1) AND (2) WILL INVOLVE VERY FREQUENT INTERACTION BETWEEN THE STAFF OF THE CENTRE FOR BIO-INFORMATICS AND PROSPECTIVE USERS OF THAT CENTRE. POINT (1) WILL ALSO INVOLVE TRAINING OF END-USERS, AND REQUESTS FOR PERCEIVED DIFFICULTIES IN USE.
