MEMBRANE SEPARATION OF CO2

Cel

Research on spinning techniques has shown that it is possible to produce fibres resistant to the high pressure of natural gas by melt spinning but not by wet spinning and a membrane module resistant to high natural gas pressures was developed. Technical and economic evaluations of the membrane systems were carried out with different models. These evaluations showed that improvement of the permeability is more beneficial economically than improvement of the selectivity. Surveys on the costs of hollow fibre membranes have demonstrated that wet spun hollow fibres are to be preferred over melt spun hollow fibres provided that pin holes can be avoided and the outer diameter can be reduced. Analyses of the final module costs showed that housing costs are the of major importance and that, for example, polymer prices are of minor importance.

Membrane modules with improved selectivity and permeability for purifying natural gases were developed by three methods;
obtaining suitable polymers by chemical and physical modification;
developing a spinning device for hollow fibres;
module development.
It was found that meltspun membranes could resist the high pressure of natural gas. The progress made in the spinning of hollow fibres, especially meltspinning, was valuable and may have applications in other fields.
THE OBJECTIVE OF RESEARCH IS TO DEVELOP MEMBRANES MODULES WITH IMPROVED SELECTIVITY AND PERMEABILITY COMPARED TO THE EXISTING POLYMERS AND RESISTANT TO THE HIGH PRESSURE OF NATURAL GAS.

THE EXISTING POLYMERS LIKE PSO, PES AND PPO SHALL THEREFORE BE MODIFIED EITHER CHEMICALLY OR PHYSICALLY.

THE TWO POSSIBILITIES OF MAKING MEMBRANES EITHER HOMOGENEOUS VIA MELTSPUN PROCESS OR ASYMMETRIC VIA WETSPUN SHOULD BE CONSIDERED.

THESE MEMBRANES OR MODULES SHALL BE TESTED ON A PILOT PLANT SCALE.
EVALUATION OF THE FEASIBILITY SHALL BE MADE BASED UPON MARKET STUDIES AND TECHNICAL-ECONOMICAL STUDIES FOR WHICH SYSTEM MODELLING OF THE MEMBRANE PROCESS IS OF IMPORTANCE.
