BOTTOM BLOWING IN THE UHP ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE.

Cel

THE MIXING OF THE LIQUID PHASES STEEL AND SLAG IN ELECTRIC ARC FURNACES IS KNOWN TO BE INADEQUATE BOTH WITHIN AND BETWEEN THE PHASES AND RESULTS IN UNSATISFACTORY APPROXIMATION OF THE REACTIONS TO EQUILIBRIUM. THE TECHNIQUES APPLIED HITHERTO FOR PROMOTING PHASE CONTACT BETWEEN THE BATH AND THE SLAG IN THE ELECTRIC FURNACE HAVE EITHER NOT HAD SUFFICIENT EFFECT OR HAVE NOT AQUIRED LONG-TERM ACCEPTANCE IN INDUSTRY.

A NEW ATTEMPT AT IMPROVING BATH MOVEMENT IN THE ELECTRIC ARC FURNACE IS BEING MADE BY INTRODUCING INERT GASES THROUGH TUYERES IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FURNACE.
THE METALLURGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILING WHEN HEARTH TUYERES ARE USED IN A 120-TONNE UHP FURNACE USED FOR MELTING BLOWN METAL WITH HIGH CR AND NI CONTENT FOR THE AOD PROCESS IN THE PRODUCTION OF STAINLESS STEEL ARE TO BE INVESTIGATED BY DETERMINING CHANGES IN MN, CR AND NI RECOVERY.
IN ADDITION, FINDINGS ARE TO BE OBTAINED REGARDING HOMOGENIZATION OF THE BATH WITH REGARD TO BATH COMPOSITION AND TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION AND ANY CHANGE IN MELTING TIME WHICH MIGHT RESULT.
A STUDY OF NITROGEN MOVEMENT IS LIKEWISE ONE OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT.
RECOVERY IMPROVEMENTS, REDUCTION OF MELTING TIME AND ENERGY SAVINGS ARE EXPECTED.
