CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROCESSES IN THE FUSION ZONE AND EFFECT ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION.

Objectif

OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS, MUCH RESEARCH HAS BEEN DONE ON THE TOP AND CENTRAL AREAS OF THE BLAST FURNACE, WITH THE FOLLOWING AIMS :

- MONITORING OF THE GAS FLOW WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE COHESIVE ZONE.
- REDUCTION OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION,
- IMPROVEMENT OF REFRACTORY LINING LIFE, THEREBY INCREASING FURNACE AVAILABILITY.

TODAY THE VITAL FACTOR IS THE HEARTH, OR THE WHOLE OF THE BOTTOM PART OF THE FURNACE, FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:
- HIGHER AND VARYING REQUIREMENTS FOR PIG IRON QUALITY,
- REDUCTION IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY CONTROL OF REACTIONS IN THE LOWER PART OF THE FURNACE,
- HEARTH LIFE CANNOT BE IMPROVED BY PATCHING BETWEEN RELININGS AND IT GOVERNS THE LIFE OF THE COMPLETE FURNACE NOW THAT LIFE HIGHER UP HAS BEEN INCREASED.

THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO APPLY THE NEW KNOWHOW CONCERNING THE TOP PART OF THE FURNACE AND THE COHESIVE ZONE TO PROCESSES IN THE BOTTOM PART OF THE FURNACE, AND ALSO TO INVESTIGATE AND INTERPRET THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES THERE.

THE RESEARCH WILL FOCUS ON THE INVESTIGATION OF MASS FLOWS (SLAG, PIG IRON, COKE, GASES) AND THEIR CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS IN THE LOWER PART OF THE FURNACE.
THIS PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO YIELD COMPREHENSIVE NEW INFORMATION ON THE PROCESSES IN THE LOWER PART OF THE FURNACE, WHICH SHOULD HELP :
- TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION STILL FURTHER BY CONTROLLING CHEMICAL CONVERSION PROCESSES
- TO INCREASE REFRACTORY LIFE IN THE HEARTH AREA WHICH IS NOW A CRITICAL POINT,
- TO STABILIZE THE QUALITY OF THE PIG IRON AND SLAG PRODUCED (SI, S, TI, O2).
