OPTIMIZATION OF WASTE PAPER FRACTIONATION TO IMPROVE SECONDARY FIBRE QUALITY FOR PACKING PAPERS

Objectif

IN DEFAULT OF SUFFICIENT WOOD RESOURCES IN THE EC AND BECAUSE OF A STRONG IMPORT DEPENDENCY ON EXPENSIVE CHEMICAL PULPS, WASTE PAPER AS CHEAP FIBRE RESOURCE HAS REACHED A VERY HIGH IMPORTANCE FROM THE ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW IN THE EC-COUNTRIES.

WHEREAS THE QUALITY OF WASTE PAPER USED BY TGE PER AND BOARD INDUSTRY DETERIORATES CONTINUALLY, THE FINISHED PRODUCT HAS TO SATISFY EVER INCREASING REQUIREMENTS. TO FULFIL THTHESE THE WASTE PAPER HAS TO BE PREPARED ACCORDINGLY, I.E. IT CAN ONLY BE USED IN RELATION TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE FINISHED PRODUCT.

FIBRE FRACTIONATION COMBINED WITH A POST TREATMENT OF THE INDIVIDUAL FRACTIONS (LONG FIBRE AND SHORT FIBRE FRACTIONS) SEEMS TO BE A PROMISING ANSWER TO THAT PROBLEM. THE PROCESS CONDITIONS AND THE MACHINERY FOR FRACTIONING MIXED WASTE PAPER GRADES - WHICH REPRESENT A GREAT PROPORTION OF THE UTILIZED WASTE PAPER - HAVE NOT BEEN PROPERLY INVESTIGATED YET. TRIALS FOR AN OPTIMIZATION OF THE FRACTIONATION PROCESS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN INDUSTRIAL PLANTS BY ALTERING THE PROCESS AND THE MECHANICAL CONDITIONS TO INVESTIGATE THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE SEPARATION EFFECT OF THE FRACTIONATION. FROM THE RESULTS CONCLUSIONS CAN BE DRAWN ON HOW TO OBTAIN AN OPTIMIZED FRACTIONATION.

THE SHORT AND LONG FIBRE FRACTIONS WILL FIRST BE BEATEN OR TREATED AT HIGH CONSISTENCY TO ACTIVATE IN DIFFERENT WAYS THE FIBRES AND THEN BE MIXED IN DIFFERENT RATIOS. SINGLELAYER AS WELL AS MULTILAYER HANDSHEETS WILL BE MADE FROM THESE DIFFERENT MIXTURES. THESE HANDSHEETS SIMULATE PACKAGING PAPER (E,G, FLUTING PAPER AND LINER) AND BOARD (E.G. FOLDING BOXBOARD AND GREY BOARD). THE TARGET IS TO INCREASE THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES FOR EACH PARTICULAR PRODUCT (E.G. CMT, RCT AND CCT OF FLUTING PAPERS, STIFFNESS AND PLYBOND STRENGTH OF BOARD).

HAVING FULFILLED THESE OPTIMISATION TRIALS IN THE INDUSTRIAL AND LABORATORY SCALE PARTICULAR FRACTIONS OF SHORT AND LONG FIBRES WILL BE MANUFACTURED TO GIVE AN OPTIMIZED APPLICATION TO PACKAGING PAPER (SPECIALLY CORRUGATING MEDIUM) ON THE PAPER MACHINE OF THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE.

THE FLUTING PAPER WILL THEN BE PROCESSED INTO CORRUGATED BOARD ON A PILOT SINGLE FACER TO TEST THE RUNABILITY AND STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF THE CORRUGATED BOARD (E.G. FCT, ECT, AND HIGH-LOW-DEFECTS).THE ATTAINED CHARACTERISTICS WILL GIVE A POSSIBILITY TO DESCRIBE AN OPTIMIZED UTILIZATION OF WASTE PAPER IN THE FURNISH OF PAPER AND BOARD. THE RESULTS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO AN IMPROVEMENT OF THE QUALITY OF SINGLE- AND MULTILAYER PRODUCTS RELATING TO A HIGHER AMOUNT OF MIXED WASTE PAPER IN THE FURNISH FOR CORRUGATING MEDIUM, TESTLINER AND FOLDING BOX BOARD. THE APPLICATION OF THE FRACTIONATION STRATEGY TO WASTE PAPER GRADES UTILIZED FOR GRAPHIC PAPERS WILL ALSO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.
