MODELLING AND APPLICATION OF BIOMASS GASIFICATION BASED POWER GENERATION SYSTEMS.

Objective

SCOPE AND PRESENT POSITION: THIS PROJECT IS UNDERTAKEN BY ENERGY OPTIONS LTD., CONSULTING ENGINEERS, WITH THE SUPPORT OF CHAM LTD. AND THE IRISH AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE TO:
- DEVELOP A COMPUTER BASED MODEL OF INTEGRATED POWER (AND COMBINED HEAT AND POWER) GENERATION UNITS BASED ON MOVING AND FLUID BED GASIFIERS AND GAS AND DUAL FUEL ENGINES THAT, FOR ALTERNATIVE BIOMASS FEEDSTOCKS, HEAT TO POWER STATION RATIOS AND OPERATING CONDITIONS WILL ALLOW INTEGRATED EFFICIENCIES TO BE DETERMINED AND THE CONFIGURATION OPTIMISED.
- DEVELOP A COMPUTER BASED ECONOMIC/FINANCIAL ANALYSIS MODEL TO ENABLE THE COST OF POWER AND HEAT TO BE CALCULATED AND ECONOMIC VIABILITY ASSESSED.
- TECHNICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY COMPARE GASIFICATION WITH COMBUSTION BASED BIOMASS FUELLED POWER GENERATION AND COMBINED HEAT AND POWER SYSTEMS.
- MAKE A PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION OF THE VIABILITY OF GASIFICATION BASED POWER GENERATION IN IRELAND, GREECE AND SOUTHERN ITALY.
- CONSIDER WHICH ASPECTS OF THE GASIFICATION, ENGINEERING, SYSTEMS AND CONTROL FEATURES OF THE TECHNOLOGY REQUIRE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT TO ENSURE EFFICIENT AND RELIABLE PLANT OPERATION.
- REVIEW THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE TECHNOLOGY.

THE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC MODELS EMBRACE COMBINATIONS OF VARIOUS BIOMASS FUELS FEEDING DOWNDRAFT OR FLUID BED GASIFIERS COUPLED TO GAS OR PILOT IGNITED DIESEL ENGINES WITH POWER OUTPUTS UP TO 5MW(E), WITH OR WITHOUT HEAT RECOVERY.
"BIOPOWER" CALCULATES OVERALL THERMAL EFFICIENCIES AND PROVIDES DATA ON GAS CALORIFIC VALUES AND OCTANE NUMBER, GASIFIER AND ENGINE EFFICIENCIES, SPECIFIC FUEL CONSUMPTION AND HEAT AVAILABLE FOR RECOVERY. THE OUTPUT PROVIDES THE KEY DATA FOR THE COMPANION MODEL "ECOMASS" WHICH CALCULATES THE COST OF POWER GENERATED BY THE SPECIFIED PLANT FOR ANY GIVEN FUEL AND OPERATING REGIME. BOTH MODELS ARE NOW OPERATIONAL AND WILL BE USED TO EVALUATE THE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF ALTERNATIVE PLANT CONFIGURATIONS AND FUELS, AND TO ASSESS THE EFFECT OF LOAD FACTOR AND TURNDOWN, PLANT SCALE AND BIOMASS MOISTURE CONTENT. THE PROJECT INCLUDES A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF THE STATUS OF BIOMASS COMBUSTION BASED POWER GENERATION WHICH PROVIDES THE BASIS FOR THE COMPARISON WITH GASIFIER/ENGINE SYSTEMS.
