TESTING OF HEAT-TREATABLE STEELS WITH A REDUCED CARBON CONTENT FOR LIGHTWEIGHT CAR WHEELS.

Objetivo

THE AIMS OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT ARE:

A) TO USE HEAT-TREATABLE STEELS WITH A REDUCED CARBON CONTENT FOR WHEEL DISCS;
B) TO IMPART HIGH STRENGTHS BY HEAT TREATMENT;
C) TO INFLUENCE RESIDUAL STRESS BY CONTROLLED COOLING DURING HEAT TREATMENT;
D) TO REDUCE THE WEIGHT OF MASS-PRODUCED WHEELS.

THE MOTOR INDUSTRY IS SHOWING INCREASING INTEREST IN ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS THAT CAN HELP TO REDUCE VEHICLE WEIGHT.

AS A RESULT STEEL HAS TO A CONSIDERABLE EXTENT BEEN REPLACED BY ALUMINIUM FOR CAR WHEELS. THE PROPORTION OF ALUMINIUM WHEELS IS ESTIMATED AT 15-20% AND IS RISING.

THERE IS LITTLE LIKELIHOOD OF HALTING THIS SUBSTITUTION AS SO FAR IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE IN PRACTICE TO ACHIEVE ANY SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT REDUCTION IN STEEL WHEELS BY USING NEW HIGH STRENGTH STEEL GRADES WITH GOOD COLD-FORMING PROPERTIES SUCH AS LOW-ALLOY STEELS TO EURONORM 149-80 AND STEELS WITH A DUAL-PHASE STRUCTURE.

IN THIS PROJECT AN ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE TO IMPART HIGH STRENGTH TO THE STEEL BY SUITABLE HEAT TREATMENT AFTER THE WHEEL DISC HAS BEEN FORMED. THE MAIN FOCUS WILL BE ON THE USE OF LOW-ALLOY HEAT TREATABLE STEELS WHICH CAN BE USED SUCCESSFULLY FOR COMPLICATED PRESSINGS THAT ARE SUBSEQUENTLY HEAT TREATED.
