DUCTILE FRACTURE PROPAGATION IN GAS PIPELINES.

Ziel

THIS RESEARCH PROGRAMME IS A CONTINUATION OF THE ONE CARRIED OUT UNDER CONTRACT 7210-KE/409 (FORESCASTING OF DUCTILE FRACTURE - PROPAGATION USING LABORATORY TESTS-SEE CS8-533). AS A RESULT OF THE LATTER, THERE NOW SEEMS TO BE A GENUINE POSSIBILITY OF CHARACTERIZING THE MATERIALS USED FOR GAS PIPELINES ON THE BASIS OF CONCEPTS OF POST-YIELD FRACTURE MECHANICS AND APPROPRIATE TESTS.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAMME IS TO STUDY THE WAY IN WHICH MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION BASED UPON LABORATORY TESTS SIMULATING REAL CONDITIONS CAN BE TRANSFERRED TO THE REAL CASE OF A GAS PIPELINE UNDER HIGH PRESSURE.

THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS WILL BE STUDIED THEORETICALLY AND EXPERIMENTALLY:
- THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE FIELD OF DEFORMATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE ADVANCE OF A CRACK AND THE R CURVE OF THE MATERIAL;
- THE EFFECT OF PARAMETERS SUCH AS LIGAMENT DIMENSIONS, EXTERNAL CONSTRAINTS AND A NON-PLANAR EXTERNAL STRESS FIELD, ON THE R CURVE OF THE MATERIAL.
