STOCHASTIC AND NON-STOCHASTIC EFFECTS OF BETA AND ALPHA RADIATION ON MOUSE SKIN

Objetivo

PROJECT 1:
NON-STOCHASTIC EFFECTS: THIS PART OF THE PROGRAMME AIMS TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT PRACTICAL RADIATION PROTECTION QUESTIONS:
1. IS THERE A MINIMUM AREA THAT NEEDS TO BE IRRADIATED TO INDUCE SUCH EFFECTS AS MOIST DESQUAMATION (EPIDERMAL DAMAGE) OR ULCERATION (DERMAL DAMAGE).
2. WHAT ARE THE THRESHOLD DOSES FOR DESQUAMATION AND ULCERATION AND HOW DO THEY VARY AS A FUNCTION OF AREA IRRADIATED.
3. HOW DO THE THRESHOLD DOSES FOR GIVEN AREAS VARY WITH THE ENERGY (PENETRATION) OF THE ALPHA AND BETA PARTICLES.
4. WHAT ARE THE RBE VALUES FOR ALPHA PARTICLES FOR THESE NON-STOCHASTIC ENDPOINTS.
5. HOW DO THE RESPONSE CURVES FOR DESQUAMATION AND ULCERATION VARY WITH THE PROTRACTION OF ALPHA AND BETA DOSES.

PROJECT 2:
STOCHASTIC (CARCINOGENESIS) STUDIES: IN PARALLEL WITH THE NON-STOCHASTIC EXPERIMENTS, STUDIES OF SKIN CANCER INDUCTION ARE PROPOSED. THESE WILL COMPARE PREDICTED DOSE RESPONSE CURVES WITH THE OBSERVED TUMOUR INCIDENCE IN MICE GIVEN UNIFORM AND NON-UNIFORM BETA IRRADIATION.
The most important message, of this long term study of nonuniform beta radiation exposure of mouse skin, is that the results are in direct contradiction to the hot particle hypothesis and indicate that nonuniform exposure produces far fewer tumours than uniform exposure. This should be reasuring to those in radiation protection who are currently concerned about the biological effectiveness of such particulates.
