HYDROSTATIC LEVELLING ACROS THE GREAT BELT

Cel

The analysis of the hydrostatic observations at Great Belt produced several results. Differences in temperature along the tube did not have significant influence on the difference of the water levels between both ends of the tube. The surrounding water was well mixed, temperatures were not very different and so the temperature measurements were not critical.

Even small differences in air pressure between the ends had a large influence on the water level.

The time series of the air pressure differences showed spectral components of up to 20 minutes which had no correlation to the observed differences between the water levels. Thus the air pressure measurements had to be filtered by a moving average process prior to the correction of the water level.

Some failures in the registration system produced gaps in the time series which have to be filled. Several methods to do this task were tested.

Though reliable, the old measuring unit for the water level needed frequent calibration. Persons using it had to have a lot of experience. For use by less trained persons, it should contain a different type of sensor which is more stable in order to avoid the frequent calibration. Several acoustic methods have been tested and gave better results.

Parts of the registration system now are being designed to meet the requirements of operation near the sea. The system will be tested at low temperatures, high levels of humidity and unstable power lines.

Calculated height transfer results include the following. The zero point of the height system of Zealand was 6.84 mm higher than the zero point of the Sprogoe system. The zero point of the height system of Fyn was 3.25 mm higher than the zero point of the Sprogoe system. The zero point of the height system of Zealand was 3.59 mm higher than the zero point of the height system of Fyn. Regarding the inner correlation of the measured time series and the necessary calibration of the gauges, the accuracy of the mean value of the height transfers from Zealand to Sprogoe and from Sprogoe to Fyn was about 0.5 mm.
