Objective THE AIMS OF THE STUDY ARE AS FOLLOWS: A. TO GAIN AN OVERVIEW OF THE CURRENT DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS ON STUDIES CONCERNING THE POST-CLOSURE RADIOLOGICAL ASSESMENT OF THE DISPOSAL OF RADIAOACTIVEWASTES IN GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS BENEATH THE LAND SURFACE OR SEA-BED.THE WORK WILL CONCENTRATE ON RELEVANT WORK WITHIN EC MEMBER STATES,BUT WILL CONSIDER ALL APPROPRIATE WORK IN EUROPE,NORTH AMERICA,JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA. B. TO LIST ALL SUCH COMPUTER PROGRAMS IDENTIFIED AND TO PRESENT DETAILED REVIEWS OF THOSE PROGRAMS SATISFYING SPECIFIED SELECTION CRITERIA.THIS DOCUMENT MAY THEREFORE BE USED AS A DIRECTORY OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS. C. TO PROVIDE A BRIEF,SEPARATE REPORT PROVIDING A STATUS REVIEW OF COMPUTERS PROGRAMS IN THE TOPICS AREAS ADDRESSED,AND COMMENTING ON THE PERCEIVED STANDARD OF ACCURACY,USEABILITY,DOCUMENTATION,ETC.SUCH A REPORT WOULD BE OF USE TO RESEARCH FUNDERS IN ALLOCATING RESOURCES FOR FUTURE COMPUTER PROGRAM DEVELOPMENTS. A directory of computer programs suitable for the assessment of radioactive waste disposal facilities in geological formation has been assembled. The programs, which are mainly applicable to the post closure analysis of the repository, address combinations of the following topics: nuclide inventory, corrosion, leaching, geochemistry, geomechanics, heat transfer, groundwater flow, radionuclide migration, biosphere modelling, safety assessment and site evolution. A total of 320 programs are identified, of which 84 are reviewed in detail, 192 in summary and 44 in tabular fashion.IN 1983 THE CEC PUBLISHED A DIRECTORY OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS (EUR 8669).THE STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN BY WS ATKINS,WITH MUCH OF THE WORK BEING CARRIED OUT IN 1982.A TOTAL OF 248 COMPUTER PROGRAMS WERE INCLUDED,SEPARATED INTO REVIEW TYPES AS FOLLOWS:50 DETAILED REVIEWS,134 SUMMARY REVIEWS,AND 64 TABULAR REVIEWS. THE DIRECTORY WAS UPDATED IN 1985,WITH THE MAJORITY OF WORK CARRIED OUT IN 1984.AN ADDITIONAL 40 PROGRAMS WERE INCLUDED,WITH 23 SUMMARIES BEING MODIFIED FROM EDITION 1.NO NEW SUBJECT AREAS WERE ADDED,AND NO"EDITION 1"PROGRAMS WERE DELETED. THE CURRENT SITUATION IS THAT THE DIRECTORY HAS AN 8 YEAR OLD FRAMEWORK WITH PARTLY 7 YEAR OLD AND PARTLY 6 YEAR OLD CONTENTS. THE COMPUTER PROGRAMS ADDRESSED IN THE DIRECTORY WILL MAINLY COVER THE POST-CLOSURE PHASE OF REPOSITORY DEVELOPMENT AND WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE FOLLOWING PRIMARY TOPIC AREAS: 1. NUCLIDE INVENTORY 2. CORROSION 3. LEACHING 4. GEOCHEMISTRY 5. STRESS ANALYSIS 6. HEAT TRANSFER 7. GROUNDWATER FLOW 8. RADIONUCLIDE TRANSPORT 9. GAS TRANSPORT 10. BIOSPHERE TRANSPORT 11. SITE/SYSTEM EVOLUTION 12. PROBABILISTIC RISK(SAFETY) ASSESSMENT IN ADDITION TO THESE TWELVE PRIMARY AREAS,APPROXIMATELY THE SAME NUMBER OF COMBINED AREAS WILL ALSO BE ADDRESSED (E.G. STRESS ANALYSIS COUPLED WITH HEAT TRANSFER),TO GIVE A COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT OF PROCESSES AFFECTING THE TRANSPORT OF RADIONUCLIDES FROM THE REPOSITORY TO MANKIND. ESSENTIALLY,THE SAME DIRECTORY FRAMEWORK WILL BE EMPLOYED AS FOR THE EARLIER EDITIONS,WITH MOST OF THE COMPUTER PROGRAMS DESCRIBED USING EITHER DETAILED OR SUMMARY REVIEWS.IN ESSENCE,A DETAILED REVIEW WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION IN TERMS OF: NUMERICAL MODEL USED- -VALIDATION STUDIES AND APPLICATIONS -PROGRAM OPERATION -PROGRAM SUPPORT -REFERENCES CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERING WHICH TYPE OF REVIEW TO EMPLOY FOR A SPECIFIC COMPUTER PROGRAM WILL BE DERIVED WITHIN THE WORK,BUT FOR DETAILED REVIEW IT WOULD BE DESIRABLE FOR PROGRAMS TO BE: -FULLY AVAILABLE -FULLY DOCUMENTED -DIRECTLY APPLICABLE TO RADIOACTIVE WASTE REPOSITORY ASSESSMENT -IN USE BY ORGANISATIONS OTHER THAN THE DEVELOPING BODY -VALIDATED -SUPPORTED FOR EXTERNAL USE HOWEVER,IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT SOME PRAGMATIC RELAXATION OF THESE CRITERIA MAY BE REQUIRED IN CERTAIN CASES.
