Traffic and QOS Management for IBC

Obiettivo

- The evaluation and demonstration of the use of AIP techniques in the implementation of network management applications. The project addresses the issues of NMS functionality and performance in the areas of traffic and quality of service (QoS) management in IBC.

- Contribution to the work of project R1024 - NETMAN, project R1053 - TERRACE and project R1022 - Technology for ATM by the provision of feedback on the functional specification and the FRM for TMN, on reference configurations for TMN, and QoS and traffic management for ATM networks respectively.

- Liaison with the consensus management project on the use of and feedback on the results of other RACE projects and other relevant EC programmes, as well as with standardisation organisations. This will be done under the coordination framework of project R1003 - GUIDELINE.

- Contribution to the production of common functional specifications to advance the understanding of the TMN. Links will also be maintained with other relevant AIP activities particularly those in the ESPRIT programme.
The main objectives were the evaluation and demonstration of the use of advanced infrastructure planning (AIP) techniques in the implementation of network management applications. The project addresses the issues of network management system (NMS) functionally and performance in the areas of traffic and quality of service (QoS) management in integrated broadband communications (IBC).
The key achievement has been the design and implementation of the second experimental test bed for the evaluation of the use and applicability of AIP techniques to telecommunications management network. A number of experimental components have been integrated within this, including: a message passing platform for object communications and transfer, an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network and services simulator and distributed object oriented network and service management elements. A case study in the area of bandwidth management (specific to ATM networks) provides the issue to be studied by the NIKESH experiment. The results and the runs of the experimental system form the basis for a further evaluation of the use of AIP. The experiment was used to perform an evaluation of the use of AIP techniques in traffic and QoS management. A particular achievement is the defination of a set of criteria for AIP evaluation in traffic and QoS management. Reviews have been undertaken of QoS and traffic management requirements analysis plus the state of the art of AIP and TMN architectures. The project also reviewed TMN architecture, and in particular the overall framework for TMN implementation.
NEMESYS has participated in the definition and production of common functional specifications.
NEMESYS has provided the case study specification for ATM network simulations.
Technical Approach

The approach taken by the NEMESYS consortium is to build a series of experimental systems, each designed to use and test a number of AIP techniques applied to aspects of IBC management. This will be done in three 'cycles' each of approximately one year. The third cycle spans the 1991 to 1992 period. It addresses the study of ATM technology with special reference to control issues, such as call handling, bandwidth management, policing, and routing. This work will include the simulation of an ATM network and services which will align with the results of other RACE projects.

Achievements

This experiment was the basis of the third experiment-EMMANUEL for which the specification and initial design is completed.

NEMESYS has participated in the definition and production of Common Functional Specifications as part of STG1.1 STG1.4 STG4.1 STG4.2 STG4.3. The project has participated actively in the 1991 TMN Conference via the demonstration of the NIKESH system and via conference papers.

NEMESYS has provided the case study specification for ATM network simulations as the basis for the MIME (R1084) project experiment.

Expected Impact

The results of the project will have an impact on the development of future TMN systems for IBC. The experience obtained in the experimental prototype work will help the selection of TMN architectures, AIP techniques and tools to build real TMN systems. In particular, the NEMESYS project is expected to contribute to the understanding of the traffic management and QoS management functions of the TMN.
