Customer Premises Network

Objectif

- Identification of requirements and specifications of terminal-to-CPN interfaces; these being inputs to RACE CFSs and to the standardisation bodies (ETSI and CCITT).
- Identification and specification of functionalities and addressing capabilities within the CPN.
- Functional specification of medium, terminal and network adaptors.
- Elaboration of evolutionary scenarios for the introduction of the IBC-CPN in the domestic area and evaluation of different options.
- Elaboration of alternative evolution paths for communication in business customer premises.
The main objectives of the project are the indentification of requirement and specifications of terminal to customer premises network (CPN) interfaces, identification and specification of functionalities and addressing capabilities within the CPN, functional specification of medium, terminal and network adaptors, elaboration of evolutionary scenarios for the introduction of the integrated broadband communications (IBC)-CPN in the domestic area and evaluation of different options and finally the elaboration of alternative evolution paths for communication in business customer premises.
The project has produced a specification of the terminal to CPN interface, that is kept continuously updated along with the progress of studies and with the work evolution in standardisation bodies.
A generic CPN functional reference model and basic CPN functionalities were defined, as a basis for further studues applied to specific CPN architectures for residential and business applications. Scenarios for domestic CPN evolution were proposed and compared and a number of necessry netwrok and terminal adaptors were identified.
An initial classification of business CPN application types, terminal equipment and interfaces were provided. Finally, the support of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) traffic on nonnative ATM local area networks LAN, addressing and interworking in broadband LAN, and connectionless data services in ATM switches were investigated.
Technical Approach

The work is split into three main activities:

- Specification of the interface at S reference point (OSI layers 1 to 3), in close connection with R1044 UNI.
- Domestic CPN evolution and functionalities. Scenarios for the introduction of the IBC CPN in the domestic environment will be developed and evaluated.
- Business CPN evolution and functionalities. CPN components; ATM; provision of low-delay and low-error- rate services; addressing for basic Gigabit operation; interconnection with Gigabit networks; definition of both services and services protocols; studies on protocols for connectionless bearer services and on gateways for LANs/MANs connections.

Key Issues

- Functional specifications of user interfaces.
- Functional specifications of typical medium adaptors.
- Draft recommendations on intra-CPN functionalities and addressing modes.
- Scenarios for target IBC-CPE configurations.
- Specifications of NAs and TAs.
- Configuration and scenarios for evolution of DCPN and BCPN.

Expected Impact

Presentation of proposals that could be a basis for reaching consensus in RACE on the key issues listed above and for a number of contributions to ETSI.

Active participation in the process of consensus formation, in defining RACE CFSs.
