STREAMLINING OF RAILROAD CARS

Cel

To verify the impact of aerodynamic improvements from streamlining railroad cars on traction energy savings and on possible improvements in comfort.
It will show that construction and maintenance costs will not be greatly affected by the new provisions.
Expected savings are of the order of 4.5% of traction energy for a 9-car train covering +- 300,000 Km at an average speed of 140 Km/h.
Three configurations were compared in different trials: cars without caisson, cars with central caisson and caissons at each end and cars with only a central caisson. The last solution always gave better results than the second one. Regarding acoustics it seems that caissons at each end of a car slightly reduce the noise level to the right of the platforms. It is more difficult to determine the effect on overall comfort of central streamlining. However, some improvement was detected.
Two trips were simulated to determine annual energy savings, which vary from 2.5 to 4.8% (or 10 to 33 TOE), showing that the goals for the demonstration stage were attained.
The project involves modification of a homogenous SNCF 9-car luxury train by adopting underneath each car's body a central covering possibly complemented by 2 small coverings at either end. Experimentation with models preceeded large-scale trials. Parallel studies were conducted to determine if the provisions are compatible with the operating constraints of a train (cooling and ventilation and the various parts accessibility) and what changes or additions are necessary. After study and execution of the streamlining, determination of resistance to progress will occur in real-life trials. Analysis of results will allow distinction between the mechanical and aerodynamic parts, the latter being the only one modified by the project. For a 9-car train pulled by a locomotive (with maximum speed of 200 Km/hr and average speed of 140 Km/hr), energy consumption is estimated at 15 KW/Km with 0.08 KWh/Km/car being the economies attained (or 4.5% for all 9 cars). The cost of streamlining is estimated as FFR 160,000 per car, dropping to FFR 100,000/car in the future.
