ENERGY CONSERVATION AND CONTROL OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION ROUTINE MONITORING

Objectif

To demonstrate that detailed energy monitoring can, when correctly interpreted, lead to cost-effective energy savings in an industrial plant which has a varying product mix and machine workloads.
To develop the analytical procedures necessary to utilise the energy consumption data and their demonstration in a practical situation.

To demonstrate the techniques necessary to manipulate the data obtained by monitoring in order to initiate and maintain energy conservation procedures.
Expected energy saving of 8 to 12% of annual oil, gas and electricity consumption. Expected payback period : 1 to 2 years.
The project was successful in identifying opportunities for energy savings. Practically, the statistical approach was found difficult to be accepted on a real time basis. Alternatively a detailed examination of energy consumption for a few days period was more successful due to the fact that the features of the machine operation were rapidly identified. Finally it resulted that the statistical approach was less satisfactory for practical use than the detailed examination of the machine performance, meaning that from a practical point of view no actual measures of energy savings were experienced.
The Tootal Ltd Works will be used for this project.

Standard meters of the recording and integrating type for steam, fuels, electricity and water supplemented by timers, yardage recorders and some temperature recorders will be used for monitoring measurements. These instruments will be collated with data already available at the works (in the form of machine records, work schedules and so on) on machine utilisation, operating speeds, temperature and other relevant processing conditions and on the quantities of goods in appropriately defined categories. This data will be employed to produce the detailed energy audits which will form the basis for identifying opportunities for energy savings.
