RECOVERY OF HEAT FROM THE PROCESS OF CONVERTING STARCH TO GLUCOSE

Objetivo

To recover heat of +- 870 KJ/Kg of glucose produced from starch, yielding an estimated annual energy saving of 265 TOE.
Recovered heat is only 55% of design forecast and, in addition, the life of the heat exchanger is too brief. The project was therefore stopped.
A unit was installed to recover all the heat in the inlet flow of the starch to glucose converter by cooling it from 140 deg. C to between 65 to 80 deg. C. Part of the heat is recovered at a minimum of 90 deg. C in the inlet flow before it reaches the gelatination point. The remainder is recovered in the outlet flow, after the gelatination point.
The converter outlet flow passes through the heat exchanger which is built as an extension of the heater in which gelatination takes place. The low and high recovery parts take place in the same counter current-wise exchanger.
