LOW COST LOW ENERGY HOUSES

Objectif

Cement-Roadstone Holdings are developing a house heating system which shows considerable promise of utilising solar energy in a cost-effective way.
It is the purpose of this project to provide a system on the market which will contribute up to 80% of the space heating demand of a well designed house.
Of interest to date has been the satisfactory manner in which the solar roof system has gone together. It is reckoned that is will be possible to manufacture the roof to its targeted cost and for two men to erect 55 m2 on site in approx. half a day. Monitoring on a heating season showed a consumption of 6,343 kWh for the "solar house" which should be compared with the computerized expectation of 6,656 kWh.
Construction in Tempelogue (Dublin) of three houses, two with low energy consumption and one reference house with heat insulation consistent with construction standards.
The three houses have practically the same design.
They are relatively heavy (thermal inertia), faced north-south and have entry locks.
The two low energy consumption houses have reinforced heat insulation (coefficient of heat transmission of 0.22 w-m2k for the roof and 0.38 w-m2k for the outside walls) and are fitted with a hot air heating system combined with mechanical ventilation consisting of a heat recuperator for the exhaust air.
The south-facing roof on one of the two houses is made up of solar collectors with a phase-change heat storage and a heat pump. The solar energy is used to heat the house and provide hot water. If there is no sun, heat is provided electrically.
In the other low consumption house (not fitted with solar collectors) the source of energy for heating and hot water is electricity.
The reference house (built to construction standards) is heated with hot water radiators by an oil-fired boiler.
