HIGH EFFICIENCY HEAT GENERATORS BLUEFLAM 91

Objectif

The object of the programme is to determine, by field trials, the actual performance of a new type of modular thermal generator for buildings. The generator is manufactured by OTB and is called "Blueflame 91". These devices have already undergone laboratory tests and the purpose of the field investigation is to determine possible adaptations to the equipment for different working conditions.
The viability of "Blueflame 91" thermal generators has been conclusively demonstrated in the field. The trials have identified the patterns most suitable for any particular application, and the most convenient over-sizing index (40%). Moreover the type and frequency of maintenance work during the experiments have enabled predictions to be made as to the type of standard technical service to be provided when the units are installed on a commercial basis.
In the first phase of the experiments some modifications proved necessary. The second phase confirmed that they were justified. The overall efficiency of the generator was always greater than 91%, often peaking 93%.
The chemical analysis revealed nearly complete combustion (CO2 12-13%) with a low air excess (10%). Smokiness and pollution from the exhausts (particularly oxides of nitrogen) were found to be negligible.
OTB evaluated the mean fuel saving in all the 700 trial units during the two year demonstration period using the Brookhaven National Laboratories (USA) statistical code. This saving is due to the greater efficiency of the "Blueflame" generator compared with the minimum values fixed by Italian law.
The annual savings of the 700 tested units were :
1098 m3 for continuous operation
1271 m3 for continuous operation during working hours according to the Italian energy saving law.
1136 m3 for non-continuous operation during working hours according to the Italian energy saving law.
"Blueflame 91" heat generators are manufactured in two series. The first series covers the 27,000 : 115,000 kcal/h range of boiler, the second covers the range 140,000 : 350,000 kcal/h. In the previous laboratory tests the technical characteristics of the boilers had already been determined. They are compact, modular in construction, highly efficient (due to a particular design of gas ducting and their limited excess air requirements) and cause low air pollution from exhausts and limited chimney smoke.
The field investigation was performed by installing 700 units distributed among 14 different firms in 6 different climatic regions of Italy. The work was planned in 6 phases:
1) Organisation of the technical control service.
2) Identification of installations.
3) Commissioning the units and periodically controlling them.
4) Data analysis.
5) Standard control of operation, taking into account any modifications.
6) Final collection and analysis of data.
