COLD STORAGE IN AQUIFER FOR THE COOLING OF A ROTARY-PRESS BUILDING

Cel

Reducing the energy consumption for mechanical cooling of the rotary-press room and offices in the Pers combinatie ("Parool/Trouw") building in Amsterdam by means of seasonal storage of cold in the ground. The expected savings over the demonstration period (October 1, 1987 to October 1, 1990) are 166,3 TEP.
Preliminary tests have shown a correct operation of the installation. Some problems were encountered concerning the actual cold storage capacity : due to the relatively warm winter of 87/88 this capacity was approximately 75 % lower than forecast. It was decided to "save" the cold stored for next summer (88).
Similarly, due to the relatively warm winter of 88/89/, the capacity was only 40 % of that forecast.
1. In conjunction with an extension of the production capacity of the rotary press, the electrical and HVAC equipment in the press-rooms needs extension and modification. This includes extension of the cooling plant from a capacity of 1100 kW to 1650 kW. Such an extension is not necessary if storage of cold in the ground is used.
2. During the winter, ground water is withdrawn from subsoil sand layers below the ground water tabel (aquifers) through a first pit. This ground water is cooled in an heat-exchanger/cooling tower system and reinjected for accumulation into the aquifers through a second pit, located at 80-100 m from the first one.
3. During the summer, the cycle is reversed and the cooled water is withdrawn through the second pit and the accumulated cooling capacity is recovered through the same heat-exchanger, used now as a cooling source. This cooling source is completed with mechanical chillers, which are integrated if the accumulated cooling capacity is unsufficient.
The project includes 3 phases -
1 : boring of a test-hole
2 : implementation of project
3 : monitoring and analysis of results. (3 years).
