TOTAL AND/OR PARTIAL HEAT RECOVERY FROM GAS PRODUCED IN CUPOLA FURNACES

Obiettivo

The main purpose of the project is to use the latent heat contained in the gas from cupola furnaces to produce electric power. The gas, currently discharged into the atmosphere causing air pollution will be removed at the source by combusting with CO.

The experimental plant will be installed at the factory of Teksid S.p.A. (Fiat group) of Crescentino (Vercelli). The factory currently has an output capacity of 133.000 tons yearly of finished castings. The foundry is equipped with the following units:
1. Cupola furnace 40 ton/hour capacity for the production of grey iron.
2. Cupola furnace 40 ton/hour capacity for the production of modular cast iron.
The plant is by now at design stage after the positive results by the research plant (contract ee b-2-162-i). It will be built outside of the foundry in an area close to the furnaces service bay. The dust damping system of the furnace is wet which allows the reduction of the dust contents from 10-12 gm/nm3 down to 0.10 gm/nm3. The operating parameters of the experimental plant are:
- gas flow out of the furnace 24.838 nm3/h - 28.000 nm3/h
- average CO contents 17 : 18 % 16 : 17 %
- heat to be recovered 11.700.000 kcal.h - 13.000.000 kcal/h net of losses
- steam pressure at turbine inlet 40 kf/cm2
- steam temperature at turbine 420 d.C. Inlet
- steam production 18.600 kg/h - 20.700 kg/h
- electric power at AC generator terminals 3.500 kw - 3.950 kw
- % of gas being used 75% - 83%.
A certain amount (from 17% in the case 2 to 25% in the case 1) of the energy available can be used partially to substitute preheating methane. The plant will mainly consist of a thermal subsystem and an electric power conversion subsystem. The scope of the first is to burn the gas flowing out of the furnaces and recover the heat so developed to produce pressurized and superheated steam to be used by the turbine. In the second subsystem the thermomechanical energy potential of the steam is converted into electric energy.
On the basis of 3.500 hours/year an electric power output of 13.650.000 kwh/year corresponding to 3.300 toe/year will be obtained from furnace effluents currently discharged into the atmosphere. Estimated endurance of plant is 10 years: the depreciation time is 4.2years.
