COGENERATION OF ELECTRICITY IN THE MELTING FURNACE OF A GLASS FLOAT

Objective

Aim of the project is cogeneration of electricity by the recover of heat from exhaust gases of a float flat glass furnace.
The steam produced at the boiler is led to a turbine coupled to an alternator that supplies electricity for internal factory network use.
In addition to the reduction of pollution, the heat exchanger is provided with a continous dry system of elimination of the dust contained in the hot gases maintaining an efficient heat transmission (not possible at the conventional heat exchangers).
The objective is to obtain a net production of 8900 MWh/y, equipment to 2198.3 TOE/y of prymary energy saving.

The output gases of the melting furnace contain a high percentage of corrosive gases and a large amount of dust. Also a high pressure is needed to for avoid the massive deposition of dust in the regeneration chambers.
This makes it impossible to use conventional heat recuperators. The normal practice is to exhaust the gases to the atmosphere via the chimney.
The project concerns the installation of a heat exchanger with steel tubes encased in cast, finned sleeves to increase the heat transmission and to prevent corrosion. The elimination of the dust which also makes the heat transmission difficult is achieved by a continuous dry system of metal granules avoiding choking.
The furnace produces gases which in flow and temperature when the combustion is reversed. The project includes an intermediate regulating boiler that maintains constant the properties of the steam. The steam passes through a turbine coupled to an alternator that supplies electricity for the factory network with the appropriated control and protection equipment.
