ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING SYSTEMS IN AN OFFICE BUILDING

Cel

To apply the lessons of a previous demonstration project (EE-215-79) by installing the most appropriate type of lighting system in the experimental building. To compare the consumption of electricity for lighting purposes with that recorded in an identical building equipped with a traditional system.
The aim of the project was a 74% saving of electricity compared with a situation of reference. The actual saving reaches 69% which means that the goal has been quite achieved.
The project underlines the following as saving parameters :
- the consciousness of users
- the individual control of ceiling lamps
- the use of desk lamps
- a better use of natural lighting
On another hand there is no savings with regard to the air-conditioning of the building which therefore becomes a higher proportion of the whole energy bill. The same comment can be made about the lighting of auxiliary rooms (toilets, corridors, etc...).
Four floors of an office building have been fitted with a new lighting system. Each bay (1.75mx5.80m) has two ceiling light fittings, each with a TL-D58W/84 lamp, and each desk a desk light with a TL-18W/83 lamp. All lights (both ceiling and desk units) can be controlled individually. The occupants have been made aware of the need and possibility to save energy.
Electricity consumption is to be compared with that recorded on three floors of an identical office building in which the lighting system also consists of ceiling units, each with a TL-D58W/84 lamp, per bay (1.75m x 5.80m) but with no desk lights. Within each room (two bays) the rows of ceiling light fittings on the facade and corridor zones can therefore be controlled separately. The aim of the project is to check whether the three factors in operation, namely:
- individual control of the ceiling lights;
- use of desk lamps; and
- the creation of energy saving awareness among the occupants
can produce a 74% energy saving,as was hoped on the basis of the earlier demonstration project.
