USE OF A HEAT TRANSFORMER BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT AND INDEPENDENT PROCESSES IN A STEEL PLANT

Objective

A heat transformer is to be used to recover heat from cooling water and generate steam for another process.
The cooling water at 90 deg.C is available from a reheating furnace.
The steam is used in a cold reducing mill/hot dip galvanising process
The innovative aspects are:
- use of a heat transformer connecting two completely different and independent processes which may increase the industrial scale of application of the transformer
- heat transformation from a substance in the liquid phase (hot water) to another substance in the vapour phase (steam)
- application of a steam ejector because of the requirement of superheated steam.

On the northern part of the Hoogovens area a hot strip mill and a cold reducing mill are situated. A hot-dip galvanizing line is in preparation and is planned beside the cold reducing mill.
Concerning the reheating furnaces of the hot strip mill there are substantial quantities of waste heat. Especially the heat in the cooling water (approx. 90 deg.C) of the skid section of the furnaces is very suitable for utilization because of the continuous and constant character of its availability.
Beside a partly internal utilization in the hot strip mill the greater part of the waste heat can be used in the cold mill/hot-dip galvanizing complex.
At the moment the heat of the cold mill complex is supplied by low pressure steam (4.5 bar/170 deg.C) with a natural-gas fired boiler in the boilerhouse nearby.
The heat transformer aims to transform the remaining part of low calorific (low temperature) process heat from the hot strip mill into steam of low pressure (but high temperature). For thispurpose the waste heat is first transported to the above mentioned boilerhouse by a hot water system and then put into the heat transformer to be installed.
The cooling capacity needed for the heat transformation will be delivered by an existing cooling tower. Some project specifications are:
. Utilization low calorific process heat:
- quality - hot water
- initial temp. - 90 deg.C
- quantity - 1700 m3 per hour
. Output heat transforner:
- quality - steam (saturated)
- temperature - 130 deg.C
- pressure - 2.7 bar (abs)
- quantity - 6.5 tons per hour
Description of the heat transformer:
Operation of a heat transformer based on the physical phenomenon that the boiling point of a liquid mixture rises according to the amount of non-volatile particles it contains.
By creating concentration and pressure differences which give a different balanceand boiling temperature, heat is transformed to a higher temperature level.
The heat transformer consists of two coupled process cycles: one solvent cycle and one working substance cycle.
Because of the especially good thermodynamic properties and the low working pressures the combination lithiumbromide/water has been chosen.
Corrosion will take place if oxygen (air) is enters the circuit, therefore close attention will be paid that the installation is properly sealed from the atmosphere.
Moreover an inhibitor (lithiumchromate) against corrosion will be added.
