ELECTRICITY GENERATION AND DRINKING WATER BY USE OF GEOTHERMAL SOURCE

Objetivo

To exploit the geothermal resources of the island of Vulcano (22 km2) to produce drinking water (until self-sufficiency is achieved) and to generate electricity in a bid to reduce oil imports by the islands of Vulcano and Lipari. Three wells - one a reinjection well - are to be drilled to 1000 m. Production required for project: 240 t/h. Expected characteristics of the reservoir are: temperature - 240 deg C; salinity - 40 g/l; enthalpy - 1050 kJ/kg.
Due to lack of permeability in the trachy andesitic lavas the project has been abandoned. However from February to April 1984, the contractor continued drilling on his own account to 2,050 m, with directional drilling to 1,700 m and the well is still unproductive with a temperature in excess of 420 deg C. By setting-up a cement plug between 537 and 784 m it was possible to carry out a side tracking operation and to drill another well at a 38 deg C deviation from 45 to 1,700 m (vertical depth 1,578 m). The well was unproductive with a temperature of 350 deg C downhole.
The project is not successful due to the fact that the permeability of the Vulcano island trachy - andesitic lava is small and does not permit steam or water circulation. However, the temperature is higher than expected and AGIP drilled another well further to the north of the present site.
Thus second project was supported by contract GE 305/86/IT. Due to the fact that this second well was dry, work was terminated.
Geological section expected: from 0 to 250 m - tuffs and modified lavas; from 250 to 1200 m - tuffs and fractured andesitic lavas. Planned form of completion: 7" screen at reservoir level. Minimum distance between the wells: 400 m. The resource is to be exploited by two flashes - one at 140 deg C,the other at 110 deg C - with the steam used to generate electricity (peak output: 5 Mw) and then recovered as drinking water. In Summer, the desalination capacity could be increased by using part of the steam to desalinate sea water (low yield), to give an estimated output of 3,200 m3. In Winter, drinking water production will be cut back, particularly by day, in order to save energy for electricity production. Between January and April 1983 the first well was drilled down to 1,448 m - the geological section crossed is: 0-350 m. Pyroclastites: 350 to 1,340 m Trachy-andesitic lava; 1,340 m - 1,448 m intrusive rock of dioritic type. A 9 5/8 casing was cemented to 607 m and a 7" slotted liner anchored between 572 m and 1,439 m. Production test performed by air lift indicates the following: a production index of 2,3 m3/day/kg/cm2 ; skin - 0 transmissivity - 0,1 D.m. maximum downhole extrapolated temperature 180 deg C is far lower than forecast.
