USE OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY FROM EXISTING WELL FOR AGRICULTURAL PURPOSES IN RODIGO

Objetivo

The aim of the project concerns the recovery of an oil exploration well to extract geothermal water for heating greenhouses, crop dryers and fish ponds. Under artesian flow conditions the well produces 80 m3/h at about 60 deg. C. This could be increased to 250 m3/h with an immerged pump. The water is used in cascade for greenhouse heating and crop drying installations (58-38 deg. C) and for fish ponds (38-15 deg. C). During the actually starting phase the 80 m3/h water flow is used. After the final use for the fish ponds the water is discharged directly for irrigation.
During the starting phase (May 90 - Janv. 91) the energy saving has being of about 480 TOE with half of plant functioning.
The innovative aspects of the plant concern the crop drying system, the fish breeding and the control of temperature of the greenhouses.
During the crop production season the total amount crop dryed has being :
CORN 14 x 10000000, dryed from 25% to 12% humidity
BARLEY 2 x 1000000, dryed from 25% to 12% humidity
FORAGE 17.5 x 1000000, dryed from 45% to 15% humidity
The flower production has being (plants) :
Nr 6000 of "POINSENTHYA"
Nr 6000 of "CYCLAMEN"
Nr 35000 of "GERANIUM".
The vegetable plant production has being :
Nr 35000 of melon.
The production of melon fruits has being :
8 x 100 kg.
The main problem met regarded the marketing of the products due to the recently operating firm.
The Rodigo geothermal plant is composed by :
1. Dryers of cereals and forage
2. Greenhouses for flowers and vegetables
3. Fish ponds
1. The dryers area is divided in two different areas : the cereals drying area and the forage area. The first one is composed in a silo (5.60 m in diameter; 6 m height) to be filled with crop, with a stirring system. The drying air is entering through the floor at 50 deg. C. The drying capacity is about 40.000 kg/day of corn. The second area is composed by nr 196 ground holes (1.20 x 1.40 m diameter) at the end of channels conveying hot air. The forage, shaped as cylindrical ball (1.5 m in diameter, 1.5 m in height) is put over the hole and dryed. The heath exchanger supplies hot air (40 deg. C) at a rate of 80.000 m3/hour.
The drying capacity of this second area is about 43.200 kg/day.
2. The greenhouses cover a surface of (1700 +3600) m2 for flower culture, and 3000 m2 for vegetables. Actually only 3000 + 1700 m2 are functioning. The others 3600 m2 are on building. The greenhouses have being designed according the principle of maximum of simplicity of construction and low cost of investment and maintenance.
3. The fish area is divided in two compartments : the first one, devoted to breeding small fry, spreads a surface of 42 x 20 m and is composed by nr 48 pools. (2.40 x 2.40 x 1.50 m) plus nr 14 (5 x 1 x 1.50 m) and nr 7 (2 x 0.80 x 2 m) pools. The water (26-27 deg. C) comes from the drying area and is discharged into the breeding adult fish pond (30 x 16 x 1 m). Actually only the last one is functioning. The plant has service area including a ware house, an office, a laboratory for chemical and biological analyses and a house for the keeper.
