VARIABLE LOW HEAD KAPLAN SIPHON TURBINES ON LE BLAVET RIVER AT ST AIGNAN

Ziel

To install and test a new range of standardised Kaplan Siphon turbines with widely varying low heads. The expected energy production at the development site is 14400 kWh per annum.
After difficulties due to the lack of water (drought) the installation has been operated scarcely these last years. It will normally run at the end of 1994.
Equipment to be installed includes :
1 - Moving blade siphon Kaplan turbine, rated head - 2 to 4. 6 m Flow - 14 m3/sec Power - 550 kW
Speed - 165 rev/min
1 - Gearbox driven synchronous generator, rated
Power - 480 kW
Speed - 1000 rev/min
Voltage - 380 V.
1 - Set of electrical and hydraulic control equipment, including 380 V:20 kV transformer, 20 kV switchboard, 380 V switchboard Speed/frequency controller with 8 element, ballast loading resistor Turbine generator programmable logic controller and data logger Isolated/synchronised generaor conrol unit.
This project will investigate the operation of a variable pitch propeller turbine under widely varying low heads. The Kaplan turbine will be installed in a concrete siphon at the existing earth-fill dam at Guerledan power plant.
For fast and accurate control of the generated frequency, in isolated operation, an 8 element thyristor load controller matches connected load to the generated power. Complementary adjustment of the blade angle adjusts generated power to priority electrical demand, and avoids extended periods of ballast loading.
The adoption of a concrete siphon arrangement for the Kaplan turbine allows the development of medium hydro power at low head sites, with improved access for maintenance and removal of components.
Adoption of a programmable logic controller and data logger enables the close monitoring of turbine and generator performance in the event of wide head variation and rapid load changes.
The use of standard technology and the availability of civil works at an existing site reduced development costs. The combination of technologies demonstrated is also of special interest for developing countries.
