Obiettivo To develop a hydro-electric scheme within a city without incurring negative impact on the environment. Existing and previously used water ways and canals will be exploited.The project entails extensive hydrological studies of the site and surroundings areas coupled with the installation of electromechanical plant and control gear.The powerhouse of the Cavaticcio plant is located in the vicinity of the head which the Reno channel, passing underground through the town of Bologna, forms in Largo Caduti del Lavoro.This small square which, as the crow flies, is at about 200 meters away from Piazza Maggiore, represents the historical heat of Bologna; it is surrounded by high buildings used for offices and dwellings.The above mentioned plant, named Cavaticcio, has the following hydrodynamic design features :- Average head 14.3 m- Maximum exploitable discharge 15.0 m3/s- Minimum exploitable discharge 3.0 m3/s- Maximum flood discharge 30.0 m3/s- Maximum power 1.890 kW- Average yearly production 8.2 x100000 kWhA vertical shaft turbine of the propeller type with 5 adjustable blades, and wicket gates also adjustable, has been installed.The motion of both parts is automatically controlled bya regulating system with feedback by upstream pressure detectors and unit speed detectors.This project involves the exploitation of existing waterways, in some cases dissued, in and around the city of Bologna. Extensive hydrological studies will be conducted to identify the most effective ways in which to use the available hydraulic resource, at all times recognising the need for minimum visual impact on an area of important historic interest.Following the hydraulic investigation such modifications as necessary will be made to the civil works arrangements and thereafter electromechanical equipment will be installed, bearing in mind the need for minimum environmental impact in terms of visual amenity, noise and vibration.The Unit Cost is 44.76 lira/kWh.
