ELECTRICAL ENERGY FROM AN EXISTING IRRIGATION/POTABLE WATER SCHEME

Objective

To use the available water energy from an existing irrigation and potable water system to generate electricity. This would be a demonstration site for a large number of possible sites available on the island of Tenerife with a total potential generation of up to about 16 MW. It is estimated that similar sites in Spain would have a total potential of over 5 GW. The generated electrical energy at these remote sites could be used locally to reduce the need for expensive transmission networks.
The project payback is estimated at about 6 years.
The hydraulic conditions at the site and the equipment efficiencies were found to be better than expected giving a slight increase in output.
The energy is to be used for local consumption.
Tenerife has many rivers and interconnecting canals, providing irrigation and potable water for the coastal regions of the island. This project entails the installation of a complete small hydrostation as part of this system, thereby using the movement of water for other purposes to generate electricity for local consumption.
