DEMONSTRATION PLANT FOR BROWN COAL GASIFICATION ACCORDING TO THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE-WINKLER PROCESS [PHASE 2C]

Obiettivo

Construction and operating of a demonstration plant with a capacity of 1,500 T/D of raw brown coal using the Winkler process at high temperature (1,000 deg. C) and under pressure (10 Bar). The subject of this contract is to increase productivity and to reduce the compression energy of the process of chemical synthesis down stream, and also to prove the higher availability necessary to justify a commercial plant, tests of the plants behaviour at varying loads and to perform some extended time tests. Operation on "Combined-cycle Power Plant" mode. Determination of the influences of the environment.L%
From March 1, 1987, to February 29, 1988, the HTW demonstration plant of the Rheinische Braunkohlenwerke AG (Rheinbraun) worked approx. 4,000 hours during seven operational periods; in the same period, test operation of the plant unit, gasification, extended over approx. 4,300 hours. In January and February 1988, the gasification unit recorded with 1,084 operating hours its longest operational period since its start-up.
In the above period, the gasifier processed a total of 111,368 t (t = tonne) of dry brown coal which corresponds to an average efficiency of 94%. The feed coal was converted to make approx. 187 mill. m3 (STP) of dry raw gas or
approx. 140 mill. m3 (STP) of synthesis gas to specification.
For testing purposes, some 90% of the synthesis gas produced was successfully processed in the synthesis unit of the Union Rheinische Braunkohlen Kraftstoff AG, Wesseling (Union Kraftstoff), a subsidiary of Rheinbraun.
In addition to an increase in performance, another major objective of this test period was a rise in the availability of the HTW demonstration plant. Compared with the preceding test period, the average availability of the plant unit, gasification, grew by approx. 8% to 49%, and that of the overall plant doubled to 46 %. At the same time, the high efficiency and yield data of the gasification unit which had already been obtained in the preceding test period were confirmed.
During the test operation from March 1, 1987, to February 29, 1988, improvements were made in particular in the solids transport system, cyclone dedusting and oxygen nozzles at the gasifier. To improve the sealing systems in the coal, ash and dust feeding screws, a new sealing principle was developed and successfully tested.
The cyclone refractory lining was redesigned and partly replaced. Changes in the construction and monitoring of the gasifier's oxygen nozzles led to an improvement of raw gas quality and, at the same time, increased the gasifier's safety. In the plant unit, sulphur recovery, a number of technical improvement measures were taken on the absorption system. During extensive absorption tests the basic data were elaborated for the addition of a final scrubbing column; in the meantime, orders have been placed for the detailed planning and supply of this equipment item.
The HTW process is a gasification process based on the fluidized bed technology developed by Fritz Winkler in 1922. Gasification in the advanced HTW process takes place under pressure at a temperature of up to 1000 deg. C, with oxygen and steam as gasifying agents.
