LONG RANGE HIGH ACCURACY NAVIGATION SYSTEM

Objectif

To extend the range of the High Accuracy 2 MHZ Positioning System, know as "Hyper-Fix" to provide coverage over the frontier areas of the E.E.C.'s economic zone, i.e. Rockall Trough, Porcupine Bank, West Hebrides, Northern Norway, Southwest approaches.
The evaluation of all the data i.e. monitor records, systems comparisons and the sea trial yielded the following conclusions:-
The buoy provided a viable L.O.P. to the user vessel.
The sea trial proved that good data at ranges in excess of 185 km was obtained from the buoy.
The buoy's movement in all sea conditions was accurately reported to the monitor station and the user vessel.
The system accuracy was within the Industry's acceptable limits i.e. 15-20 meters.
The bouy's power supply system (Gas Generator) initially proved unreliable.
The buoy when deployed was very difficult to service even in the relatively shallow water close to shore.
Given the current state of the industry with oil companies cutting exploration budgets, especially in frontier areas where a system like Hybuoy might be used, it is felt that the expense involved of building and deploying two, possibly three, such buoy's would prove uneconomical. Therefore further research in this area has been shelved.
The wide use now being made of GPS and in particular Differential GPS for positioning has ensured that the "Hybuoy" (Hyperfix is a buoy) system will never be used for positioning.
In order to extend the present range of the Hyperfix system (20 - 250 kms for 24 hour operation) the project envisaged the deployment of a buoy fitted with a Hyperfix transmitter. The buoy deployed in existing Hyperfix chain coverage would then retransmit positioning data to the user's vessel. In addition to the line of position (L.O.P.) generated by the buoy, the user would also receive from the buoy updated buoy positions as observed by the buoy from the received L.O.P.'s from the Hyperfix shore stations. To prove that the changing buoy position was accurately monitored by the Hyperfix, independent checks on the buoys position would be made using Micro-wave and acoustic positioning systems.
