Objetivo The project undertakes the work necessary to develop an advanced seismic streamer and computer system capable of supporting high resolution marine seismic surveying. This project will improve the capabilities in :- marginal fields exploration- identification of subtle trapping mechanisms- reservoir development. The prototype was found to be comparable with a conventional system when similarly configured but when used at its higher channel capacity, the prototype gave encouraging results indicating enhanced resolution and lack of spatial aliasing. The computer based control systems were overly complex and expensive, the very higher temporal sampling rates could not be stored directly to archive media and are not needed for normal seismic acquisition. The main problem was the data rate for a full size streamer - this could be reduced by reducing the bandwidth of the pre-digitisation filters and increasing the size of the basic recording group. The mechanical construction of the prototype was failing by the end of the test - production systems would need to be significantly stronger to survive for several years active use.The responsibility for interation and re-design and testing was handed over to STC as phase 4 of the SEISTREAM project. This project is part of a development programme to produce a seismic streamer. The 2 first phases of this programme have been carried out under the contract TH 01031/83. The present phase is devoted to the trials of a prototype 512 channel, 1,5 Km streamer, in various North Sea weather conditions. The main characteristics of the streamer are :- 100 m acoustically active sections with each section containing 32 hydrophone groups;- between any 2 sections, 4 data acquisition modules (DAU) with telemetry interface module and power distribution module will form a node. Each node will :- absorb data from 32 groups (16 from each adjacent section)- undertake signal condition (high pass, low pass filtering and calibration)- perform digitisation (instantaneous floating point at 0.5 msec)- merge the data on to the telemetry highway. All auxiliary channels such as compasses, depth sensors, depth controllers etc... will be controlled by the telemetry system which itself will interface to a general purpose computer.Under software control the computer will undertake :- data stream organisation- data validation- error detection and fault location- real time processing- committal to final archival storage.
