Cel Original aim was to develop a complete system, including rig, dowmhole equipment and special equipment. A test well realised in 1990 with a first prototype of that system has shown many problems coming from using downhole equipment not specifically adapted to slimhole operations. It has ben decided to focus on slimhole downhole equipment, including bits, core heads, stabilizers, core barrels, drill string and drill collars, the base of related dvelopments being a mathematical model describing the drilling process from both mechanical and hydraulical points of view.Aimed depth is 3500 m, final diameter is 4 3/8" to 4 7/8".All above-mentioned equipments are presently in manufacturing and will be available very soon for slimhole applications.BITS AND COREHEADS.A number of bits and core heads have been designed in above-mentioned diameters, taking in account following objectives : high rotation speed, high torque, good cleaning, good wear and impact endurance.STABILIZERS.Slimhole stabilizers have been designed, suitable to be inserted anywhere in the drillstring (near the bit, on the core barrel or in line).CORE BARREL.A slimhole wire-line core barrel has been developed. The core diameter is 57,6 mm, the core length being 6,12 or 18 m (modular system). After each coring phase, the core is retriewed by means of a wire, inside the drill string, without having to pull it out.The core barrel is heavy duty, like the drillstring hereafter.DRILLSTRING AND DRILL COLLARS.High torque drill rods and collars have been perfected, by means of a new thread structure. Nominal diameter is 3 1/2". Maximum working torque is about 30,000 lbft (bench tested). Traction, fatigue and tightness tests give excellent results as well.DRILLING SIMULATOR.The mechanical-hydraulical model has been put on computer, and may be used advantageously when choosing drilling equipment, or on site, when determining drilling parameters.
