RESEARCH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STEEL GRAVITY PLATFORM FOR 350 M WATER DEPTH

Obiettivo

To develop the design of a steel fixed platform for the exploitation of oil-gas fields in water depths up to 350 m.
The development of the project has comprised the completion of the preliminary design of the P-350 tripod-shaped steel gravity platform. Those aspects considered critical for establishing the feasibility of the platform have been defined and analysed.
In particular, it has been shown that the major problem is undoubtedly that of construction. At the present time, structures of the dimensions required to exploit a hydrocarbon deposit in 350 m of water in the North Sea are barely feasible.
The construction method adopted, after considering various alternatives, is considered to be an important achievement in that it combines proven technologies in an innovative way. Such a procedure makes it possible to develop the final design, without having to solve new problems, and to then proceed with the various construction phases without encountering any critical stages in development.
In addition, percertification of the project has been obtained from Det Norske Veritas, which has also checked the quality of the work . DNV has concluded that the P-350 platform could be installed in the North Sea beyond the 61st parallel, or in the Mediterranean, without significant structural changes.
Among several configurations considered during the project development, the most suitable one turned out to be a gravity tripod platform. The main structural components are: three foundation bases: three legs coming from the foundation bases up to the deck: a lower triangular frame: a conductor tower. The platform has been designed for 31 m wave height, 30,000 T payload and north sea meteoceanographic conditions. The assembling operations are performed in two phases: assembling in dry dock of the lower part including leg sections of sufficient length and final assembling in scheltered deep waters using floating yards. Norwegian companies took part in the activities as subcontractors.
