INTEGRATED SOLAR ENERGY AND BIOMASS ENERGY SOURCES ON A FARM

Objetivo

The project demonstrates the operation of integrated renewable energy systems in different agricultural production units of a single farm.
These include:
- a biogas plant working on cattle waste providing fuel for an electricity generating unit.
- flat-plate solar collectors supplying hot water for crop drying, aquaculture, cattle units, greenhouses and digester system.
The multi-energy system is operational since April 1982. The total surface of flat-plate collectors has been reduced to 2 x 60 m2 and the methane digester capacity increased from 80 to 200 m3. The mixing device is a surface pump to break the scum-layer. Two heat exchangers maintain the temperature at 35 deg.C.
10.5 m3 cattle waste is available daily as a slurry of 8% total solids, and used to load the methane digester
The digester is loaded at a rate of 2.9 kg volatile solids per m3 of digester and per day. Mean residence time is 31 d.
250 Nm3 biogas are produced daily.
150 m3/d biogas is used in two 13.8 kW TOTEM cogenerators at a rate of 8.4 m3/h during 15 hours a day and producing also 33 thermal Mcal/h. Monthly 5.4 electrical MWh and 13.5 thermal MWh are produced.
A tank with 50 m3 capacity has been built for the cultivation of eels. The required water is heated partly through 60 m2 solar flat-plate collectors of the Pirelli rubber low-cost type, partly with biogas through theboiler and partly with the recovered heat from the co-generators.
2 500 m2 green houses had been installed and require 280 tep per year, that is 800 Mcal/h to maintain the temperature at 21 deg.C. Part of these greenhouses are heated through 60 m2 flat-plate solar heat collectors including 4 types of sophisticated systems.
A micro-climatic monitoring stations have been set up.
An area of 4 600 m2 has been equipped with 5 000 m IRRISOR-rain irrigation tubes and 500 m pipe to bring the water at a rate of 3 to 6 m3/h.
The total yearly energy production is equivalent to 43.6 toe entirely utilised in the exploitation which for that part has become over 90% self-sufficient.
Simple Payback periods are respectively 7 years for the biogas plant and over 10 years for the solar plant.
Experience gained during the implementation and the initial management of the multi-energy, multi-purpose system, has made it possible to verify appropriate plant solutions in view of longer development of thetechnologies.
The biogas uses cattle manure and produces fuel for an electric generator. Biogas is produced at a daily average of 250 m3.
The flat plate solar collectors not only heat the biomass during biogas production but also supply the heating requirements of the farm's crop drying, cattle breeding, aquaculture and greenhouses.
Annually an equivalent of 43.6 tep. is produced all of which is consumed by the farm. 2 Totem type total energy units (standard) produce 30 electrical Kw and 76 thermal Kw (66,000 cal/h). The cereals and drying plant operate with low temperature fluids.
Two valuable fish species are bred in the aquaculture system which uses solar energy to maintain optimum thermal levels.
The farm's orchard and vineyards use self-cleaning irrisor type rain irrigation. Plant parasites are monitored by microclimatic stations; these allow the controlled use of pesticides.
