DEMONSTRATION PROJECT CONCERNING 10 SOLAR HOUSES WITH AIR-TYPE COLLECTORS AND A HEAT STORAGE SYSTEM IN CONCRETE

Cel

Proving that the use of solar energy for heating, ventilation and hot water supply may be economically justifiable in new houses to be built between 1985 and 1990 in the EC-countries, having a temperate climate, if mutually-attuned components with long life spans and needing little maintenance are used.
The measuring results indicated that more than 40% of the heat demand could be covered by solar energy. The average energy saving of the four solar houses was 800 m3 gas per house compared to a gas consumption of 1,780 m3 for conventional house. The additional average electricity consumption for the solar houses is approx. 170 KWh per year and per house. The energy produced by the 'solar' system, expressed per m2 of collector surface and per year was however not measured. The project is not economic due to the high investment costs. A cost reduction in the case of mass production will also not make it profitable in medium term. But much has been learned how systems and components can be improved in respect to lower costs.
The solar energy system consists of air-type collectors (gross surface 16m2) connected to a heat-storage system in the form of a concrete column placed in the centre of the dwelling.
The absorber has been provided with a black spectral-selective layer. The heating installation employs hot air and mechanical ventilation. A hot water container (capacity abt. 140ltr) has been incorporated in the column. Electricity is used for after-heating.
Auxiliary heating in the solar houses is done by electricity. The reference houses are connected to the city district heating grid. Due to considerable price escalations changes of the project were necessary. Now only 4 dwellings are equipped with air-type collectors, the other 6 are used as reference dwellings. The funding of the project by the Commission was reduced.
