PV POWER SUPPLY FOR 3 MICROWAVE TELEPHONE EXCHANGES

Obiettivo

The project makes the power supply (2 x 7.4 kW) of the telephone connection between two small islands and the main island (Guadeloupe) more reliable.
The former power supply by unreliable grid connections (hurricanes) of bad quality (tension peaks) and stand-by Diesel generators has been replaced by 100% reliable power sources.
The PV generator installed on "Terre de Bas" started operation in March 1988, the one on "Terre de Haut" in November 1989; both work without any major problem: even after the hurricane "HUGO" the power supplies continued to operate. The users are satisfied because of the high reliability of the systems.
The unit energy costs are evaluated to be 2.6 ECU/kWh for the demonstration projects and 1.8 ECU/kWh for a replication.
The costs for the installation of the photovoltaic system are considerably higher than the replacement of the obsolete Diesel generators.
However the higher initial investment cost is compensated by the advantages in reliability and long term savings of the modern photovoltaic installation. Similar systems could be interesting for many small island telephone connections. The two largest islands (Terre de Bas and Terre de Haut) of the "Iles des Saintes" archipel close to Guadeloupe have each a telephone selector station and a microwave transmitter station. (Each with a power consumption of about 20 kWh per day).
The former power supplies by the grid and by Diesel stand-by generators have been replaced by two appropriate photovoltaic systems each using (184) Photowatt modules with a peak power of 7.36 kW, OLDHAM batteries (48 V, about 96 kWh capacity) and an inverter for maintenance equipment (1kVA).
The battery rooms and the switch gear rooms (charge regulators, over-tension protection, diodes) are lighted and ventilated by a supplementary 320 Wp array (8 modules) with extra batteries (12V,3 kWh capacity).
