PV POWER FOR FIVE RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSINGS

Objectif

PV power for signals and gate arms of five level crossings of a railway. For safety reasons high reliability of the power supply is required.

Five level crossings of the secondary railway line from Pisa to Vada, between Pisa and Collesalvetti are equipped with standard (FFSS), type V301, automatic gates and signals.
The subsystem "Ospedaletto" (closer to Pisa) powers two level crossing the nearby subsystem "Casa del Vento" (closer to Collesalvetti) powers three level crossings.

Module descrip. : ITALSOLAR (now EUROSOLARE), Type 36 MS/C, 50 Wp, monocristalline. 36 cells, 5 inch square, 960 x 443 x 35 mm, 7.5 kg.
Connection : Four strings of 10 series connected panels (120 V operation, 220 V open circuit) in the subarray which is directly and continuously connected to the battery. Two other subarrays with four strings of 12 series connected modules are connected through the charge regulator.

Load descrpt. : 144 V, DC for the motors of the gate arms. The signal lights and all of the safety system are powered (through the inverter) by 150 V AC. Average energy drain: 10 to 16 kWh per day.
Monitoring: At the "Ospedaletto" subsystem irradiance (Kipp & Zonen), temperature, currents, voltages, ecc. (about 16 data) are measured and stored as hourly averages on the hard disk of a personal computer. The data are collected every two month on a floppy disk for further processing. The "Casa del Vento" subsystem is not monitored.
