GREENHOUSE FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT DRYING WITH AIR COLLECTORS AND RADIANT FLOOR HEAT STORAGE

The aim of the project is to demonstrate how solar air collectors will provide heat for 100 m2 greenhouse in which up to 12 tons per day of apricots will be dried under carefully controlled conditions.
The 25 cm thick concrete slab flooring will contains metal tubes through which hot air from the greenhouse is to be circulated. The design of the slab is such that heat will be released during the night.
Expected energy savings are 14 TOE/yr; payback 8 years.
The system is use mainly for drying apricots although smaller amounts of grapes and figs are also being dried.
Over the 24 month monitoring period, the production was : 45 Tm during the first year (6 month of 1988), 290 Tm during the second year (1989) and 390 Tm for 1990. The system has met the projected production goals.
This greenhouse will be placed in Campos, Mallorca some 40 km from Palma on private land which the firm Mallorca Agroexport SA uses for direct sun drying of apricots. The greenhouse is close to : the necessary machinery to cut, and store apricots; the sulphation room and packer.
The combination of air collectors (211 m2) greenhouse (100 m2) and storage, replace the traditional drying method of placing apricots on racks in the open air.
Outside the apricot drying season, the installation is used from March to November to dry other products.
The drying greenhouse walls are made of brick insulated with 2 cm thick extruded polyurethane. It has a transpoarent cover of cellular polycarbonate. The greenhouse has a load capacity of 12-15 tons of apricots.
The heat is stored in the concrete floor; a total of 270000 kcal/day is stored thereby allowing 24 hrs operation. The single glazed air collectors inclined at 30 degrees comprise an absorber plate selectively coated with black chrome.
Each collector, weighing 30 kg, has a useful area of 2.13 m2. The collectors have been protected by the following patents 276.396 281.027.
