CIRCULATING FLUIDISED BED STEAM GENERATOR FOR COAL AND LOW GRADE FUELS

Ziel

To demonstrate a high efficiency cost effective circulating fluidised bed steam generator for industrial uses, burning coal and low grade fuel which cannot be burned effectively in conventional plants. Energy saving is estimated at 13,350 TOE/y. Payback calculated at 6 1/2 years.
The circulating fluidised bed steam generator at Dumfries has been operated by client personnel during 1987. Foster Wheeler has provided supervision and advice as required. General plant operation has been satisfactory on all solid fuels fired including coals and peat. The novel components incorporated into the plant have performed to an acceptable level although some areas have required modification prior to client acceptance during the demonstration phase of the project.

The boiler efficiency has been evaluated during performance test to BS 2885 method B. Tests were undertaken on coal and peat and in both cases overall boiler efficiency was better than the guarantee values and prove the advantages of the design philosophy incorporated into this boiler plant.

The CFB boiler unit was designed for a peak rating of 110% MCR on coal and peat. Tests have been completed on this requirement and the plant operated successfully at the overload condition on both fuels without problem.

Evaluation of process performance has also been undertaken during the demonstration period and results indicate the plant is operating close to the design basis over the load range. Turndown of 5. 1 has been regularly demonstrated under automatic control and with full steam superheat temperature and pressure overall plant control has been good.

Emissions have been monitored and results indicate that nitrogen oxide emissions are below 50 ppm at loads above 60% full load. Demonstration trials have been completed and the plant is now accepted by the client and handed over for his sole generation.
The advanced circulating fluidised bed steam generator will have an output of + 40,000 kg/hr steam. The new design will incorporates features to assist in lowering the capital cost of future steam generators especially in sizes below 50,000 kg/hr. Annual energy output of the plant is estimated at 8. 7 x 10 8 MJ/y with thermal output at 31. 5 MW.
The project has demonstrated a commercial scale plant to prove its multi fuel firing capability, its ability to burn low grade fuels within strict emission control regulations, and operate within lower noise levels. The demonstration has also proven combustion control and the ability to switch automatically from one fuel to another including the use of fuel oil without loss of output or load following capability.
