SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETIC ENERGY STORAGE DEMONSTRATION UNIT

Objectif

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the industrial and commercial viability of a superconducting magnetic energy storage unit. This will be done in several phases:
- by developing techniques for constructing a superconducting coil connected to the A. C. power system through A. C. /D. C. converters which allow injection of active or reactive power.
- by developing techniques for voltage control and stabilisation
.
- by constructing a mobile S. M. E. S. and performing several thousand hours of experimental operation on it.
- by presenting a draft design of a general underground installation.

The equipment will be constructed on one or more trailers to form a mobile demonstration unit which will consist of the following components:
- a superconduction coild and cryostat with all the necessary current leads and helium transfer accessories.
- a liquid helium generator capable of operating in closed circuit on the above coil.
- a power supply system comprising circuit-breaker, transformer and A. C. /D. C. converter.
- a central control system.
The system, when working with a power plant of 600 - 1000 MW capacity, should raise its efficiency by 1%. The proposed demonstration unit will have a power rating of 20 MW and be able to store 50 kWh of energy.
