Objetivo The aim of the project is to undertake a closely controlled parametric experimental study of the dynamic response of flexible pipes due to current and slug flow. The information obtained will help form the basis of an improved understanding off the behaviour of this type of pipe technology. Results showed that both the models and the commercial pipes suffer sustained vortex induced vibrations, the amplitude of which is dependent on the amount of structual damping. Vibrations are predominantly cross-flow. Internal slug flow is of secondary importance and for the configuration tested caused motion in the in-line direction only. Part way through the project the work on top-end motions was abandoned in favour of work on tension effects and the effect of structural mass and slenderness ratio. The experimental work conducted on these topics showed that tension influenced the amplitude of vibration and a combination of structural mass and slenderness ratio influenced the onset of vibration. The project is in two stages each taking one year to complete.Stage 1 will investigate the vortex induced response of flexible pipes including influence of bending stiffness and mass. Both modelled and commercially available pipe will be tested for a range of configurations and conditions. The influence of imposed top motions will also be investigated.Stage 2 will investigate the effect of internal slug flow up both the modelled and commercially available pipe. Changes in slug flow length and frequency will be made to examine if flexible risers will/be susceptible to transient or resonant motions.
