IMPROVEMENT AND TEST OF A COMPACT SEPARATOR ON AN OFFSHORE PLATFORM

Improvement and test of a new compact vertical three phased separator for offshore oil production, reducing weight and saving floor area on top-sides.
REFERENCE TO PERFORMANCES :
Design performances were achieved. Moreover, Oil/Water separation was better than expected.
REFERENCE TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE SEPARATOR :
- The separator accepted the instantaneous flow excursions of the oil well very well : the flow varied from 2000 to 9000 m3/hr with an average at 4000.
- during the two campaigns, there was no incident or shut-down of the OBAGI and OLO field due to the insufficiency of separation performances or malfunctioning (for instance, shut-down of the gas compressors due to liquid droplets in the gas) and the reliability of the separator can be considered as totally satisfactory in accordance with ELF NIGERIA requirements.
- The examination of the internal equipment of the separator after the first test campaign does not reveal any damage.
REFERENCE WITH COMVENTIONAL SEPARATOR
The compact separator is about 2 to 3 times smaller than the usual separator (and design deck-load 3 times smaller). The direct manufacturing cost is lower or equal.
CONCLUSION
The performances of the O.C.S. (Offshore Compact Separator) are in good agreement with what was expected from the basic design of the separator. The testing campaign (officially ended in September 30th 1992) proved the correct operation of the 3-phase separator. Furthermore, ELF-NIGERIA pursue the field exploitation using the separator, therefore, demonstrating the validity of the concept.
- Inspection of the state of the 15/25 000 bbl/d compact separator on the OBAGI site (ELF-Nigeria)
- Definition and implementation of several modifications in order to reduce liquid carry over in the gas and improve oil/water separation.
- Test of the modified separator on the OBAGI site
- Transport and installation of the separator on an offshore production platform
- Long duration testing of the separator.
