FLEXIBLE PRODUCTION BUNDLE

Obiettivo

The aim of the project is to group together in a single pipe both the service line and the electrohydraulic umbilical for Formerun I. S. U. (Integrated Service Umbilical) providing service and remote control and monitoring functions for a wellhead. Alternatively, the aim is to group together the production line, service line and electrohydraulic umbilical forming a SWM (Single Well Multibore) providing production line, service line and remote control and monitoring functions for a wellhead.
The original features of this project lies in the placing of the various hydraulic and electric lines around a central COFLEXIP core and protecting then with a packing device with enables all stresses to be transferred to the central core. They must have a high compressive, shear and bending strengh; be as light as possible and withstand temperatures from -20 deg. C to +50 deg. C, be sea water and sea organism resistant.
The second essential point is that simultaneous connection of all elements.
- The behaviour of the peripheral hoses was satisfactory during the two phases of dynamic tests.
- The behaviour of the peripheral hoses made in stainless steel tube was satisfactory during the two phases of dynamic tests.
- The theoretical determination method of the stress rate on stainless steel tubes is satisfactory. This method is checked by the stress measurement in tubes with strain gauges.
- Electrical cables : In both prototypes, omly the armoured electrical cable has kept its characteristics. So, to be reliable the electric cables layed up in ISU must have a very high axial stiffness. This condition involves the use of armoured electical cables having a very low armouring angle < 15 deg.
2. 1 BASIC STUDIES
Selection of base elements (flexible pipes, electric cables and packing materials), theoretical study of the materials that can be used for packing, stainless steel pipe fatigue when assembled around a COFLEXIP core, the behaviour of these kind of flexible pipes (I. S. U. and S. W. M).
2. 2 FEASIBILITY STUDIES
Adapting material means required to produce samples. This covers the following :
- tools required to make packing filler (extrusion heads and tooling, moulds, etc. . . )
- tools required to make samples (mandrel, stiffening tube,. .. )
- tools required for ensheating the samples,
- adapting COFLEXIP test means to carry out preliminary tests ( coefficient of friction measurement, compression between plates and bending moment measurement).
MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES are seven, each with a length of between 5 and 7 metres.
- Number 2. ISU type A : the peripheral elements are separated by packing in the form of an extruded shaped bar. We have made one ISU with stainless steel elements and another with flexible elements. With the latter we had filler heads with 2 types of materials of different hardness (EPDM and EP048).
- Number 1. ISU type B : the stainless steel peripheral elements are laid on a grooved band and then covered with a form strip.
- Number 2. ISU type C : one has stainless steel peripheral elements and the other flexible elements. The elements are buried in a flexible matrix in the form of a flat pack which is then spiral wound round a core.
- Number 1. ISU type A : the flexible peripheral elements are separated by packing in the form of a low density, polyethylene hollow extruded shaped piece.
- Number 1. ISU type A : the flexible peripheral elements are separated by packing in the form of low density, polyethylene, solid extruded shaped pieces.
LAYING FEASIBILITY
Traction tests with a caterpillar (determination of the coefficient of friction), collapse tests between plates and measurement of the bending moment enabled usto make a selection between the various solutions as a function of different laying and storage conditions.
2. 3 ADAPTING THE MEANS TO CARRY OUT THE FEASIBILITY TESTS Production of prototypes for dynamic and statistical tests.
This basically involves adpating the means for :
- extrusion and sheating in the production of filler and sheaths,
- adaptation of the industrial assembling machine,
- tests to measure the precise characteristics of the prototypes,
- a test bench for dynamic testing of the two prototypes selected subject to 3300000 bending cycles in a single plane.
2. 4 PROTOTYPE PRODUCTION
Two prototypes were produced. The peripheral elements are in stainless steel in one instance and hose in the other. They are both type A with solid, low density polyethylene filler. They were fitted with end pieces grouping together all the terminals.
2. 5 STATIC AND DYNAMIC TESTS
Static tests to determine the characteristics of the prototype :
- collapse test between plates,
- caterpillar traction
