COLUMN STABILIZED PRODUCTION PLATFORMS

Cel

Unlike drilling platforms which involve highly standardized procedures and equipment, floating production systems must fit an array of special requirements and equipments in a combination which is specific to each oil or gas field. Standards are far from being set whilst operators have so far considered a wide variety of concepts.
The aim of the project was to concentrate on typical areas or systems of a column stabilized production platform and to provide for each area or system a set of guidance drawings, specifications and operation procedures which could be combined to meet any given circumstances.
Areas or systems of interest were, but not limited to : subsea and riser systems, riser suspensions and handling systems, drilling/workover/servicing rig, production processing system, water/gas injection systems, flare, export system and temporary storage, auxiliaries, living quarters, structural patterns, mooring systems, etc.
PHASE 1 - MARKET SURVEY :
24 Mailed questionnaires were sent to Major Oil and Gas European Companies. 11 replied & showed zone interest. A bibliographic survey of existing F.P.S. facilities complemented the analysis of Operators' expressed trends, 20 Europena Shipyards received a specific questionnaire; 12 answered. To suit most shipyards building capacities, the following platforms iddimensions were enforced : max. width = 63 m - max. Lightship draft = 7 m.
PHASE 2 - RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT WORK :
Regulations & Research criteria were set up.. Riser configurations, Rig lay-outs, process equipments lau-outs as well as related nomenclatures are completed. Primary structure sampling, living quarters study, crude oil buffer storage and mooring system design were carried out, too.
PHASE3 - SUGGESTED PLATFORM CONFIGURATIONS & LAY-OUTS :
3 suggested configurzation sketches were drawn up (ghost or typical) for 3 prodution cases:
- 60 000 BPSO }
- 30 000 BPSO with or without workover rig, gas lift or gas injection/gas export, water injection
- 100 000 BPSO }
The payload capacity of each platform was slightly beefed-up with regards to the original project aim.
The 60 000 BPSO is at detailed lay-out stage with workover, gas injection and water injection options, while the 30 000 PSD is drawn with gas lift and handling option.
The relevant computer check of structural analysis, stability and behaviour at sea was carried out, cost assessment of subsystems & systems was finally done.
The research and Development work is available as a set of drawings, computations, specifications and nomenclatures. It will be assembled, for commercial purposes and presented in an A-3 format binder to potential users.
A program extending over a 27 month period was carried out. It included a market survey : potential builders (such as naval shipyards) and oil & gas operators received a questionnaire about their current needs, points of interest and present technical targets. A call survey and a questionnaire analysis followed and helped in finalizing the design criteria and workscope of the project. Then, the research and design development phase started up. Innovation was focused on platform arrangement in close relation with subsea equipment (rig layout, servicing & diving systems layout, production & auxiliaries layout).Special attention was paid to buffer storage and export systems as well as to guidelines for stability and ballast systems. Improvement of primary structure, living quarters & permanent mooring systems was sought. Writing of operation manuals completed this.
The next step of the study consisted of designing three new typical platform configurations and layouts (respectively :4000 tons pay load/4 piles, 7500 tons pay load/6piles, 10000 tons pay load/8 piles) taking into account the material produced in the previous phases. A related cost assessment was then established. Finally, a set of documents (specification, drawings, procedures was assembled in a report book.
