DEVELOPMENT OF HEAVY OIL PROCESSES

Ziel

The development of a process for recovery of heavy oil in west germany is the subject of this project. The nordhorn field was discovered in 1942, however oil is not recoverable by conventional means.
No further field tests at nordhorn are envisaged until a better understanding of the uses of the oil is obtained, the following possibilities will be looked at:
1. Use as fuel in power stations
2. Prime matter in the manufacture of bitumen
3. Prime matter in coaking fuels.

Tests carried out so far have shown that steam flooding and steam stimulation can be possible recovery methods however it is not clear yet whether the oil can be economically produced.
In 1975, 5 wells were drilled. They should give a clear picture of the geology and dimensions of the reservoir. Most important they will give rock and oil samples from all wells as all the wells have been completely cored. Very little oil has been recovered from the cores, all the wells were perforated and
300 litres of oil were recovered from 2 wells. This oil had accumulated in the bore hole over a period of some weeks. The laboratory tests carried out were:
Evaluate the rock physics data
Evaluate oil properties
Flooding tests with hot water and vapour
Tests of in situ combustion
Solvent tests with organic solvent
Research into uses of the oil

Because of the high oil viscosity 1.000.000 centipoises at reservoir conditions only thermal methods and the use of solvents seem appropriate. At well nordhorn 1005 two steam injection tests (nov. Dec. 1977) had to be abandoned after 4 days because of too small absorbtion by the reservoir. The 2nd injection test (july-august 1978) was applied using higher pressures and the well absorbed within 14 days 1,000 T of vapour and the production test obtained 56 T of oil and 290 m3 of water.
