RESEARCH ON IMPROVED HYDROCARBON RECOVERY FROM CHALK DEPOSITS ('CHAP'-PROJECT)

Obiettivo

Research on improved hydrocarbon recovery from chalks deposits ('chap'-project).
The research phase of the project is being finalised and has resulted in the development of:
- an improved productivity evaluation technique, utilizing a special logging tool for fracture detection and for determination of the fracture orientation.
- a drainhole drilling technique employing ultra-high angle wells drilled perpendicular to the least in-situ principle stress
A simulation technique consisting of a viscous fingering acid fracturing technique in which the fracture is subsequently propped with a non-crushing proppant.
Combination of these techniques may reduce costs of development of chalky reservoirs. Attempts to have the techniques field tested have as yet been unsuccessful.
The 'chap' programme as approved by the EEC was initiated mid 1979. It comprises three basically independent lines of investigation, each proceeding stepwise from laboratory studies and experiments to field evaluation of the developed technique, if warranted.
