MARIENBRONN INJECTION PILOT PROJECT

Cel

The MARIENBRONN injection pilot project is intented to master the technology and methodology of exploitation of heavy oils by steam injection.
After a number of difficulties encountered in introducing the "forced circulation" type steam generator into service had been solved, the first stimulation cycles by "huff-n-puff" of the various wells took place in 1984. The initial results of the injections revealed the highly heterogeneous nature of the reservoir and establishment of communications between certain wells shows that, in these sectors, the stimulation phase must be replaced directly by the steam drive phase.
When introducing the production equipment into service, serious difficulties were encountered with the oily water treatment (coalescer and active carbon filters).
Despite the modifications made by raising the operating temperature and controlling the flows, the system is not operating satisfactorily. De-oiling of the production waters by coalescence of drops of heavy oil is not operational.
Under these conditions, the discharge of the "de-oiled waters" into the geological stratum is problematical and in the medium term, it is expected that the discharge well will be blocked.
The field of application is MARIENBRONN reservoir, which contains an oil with a density of 0.99 and an in situ viscosity of 227 poises. This reservoir consists of sands and conglomerates and lies about 250 metres below the surface. It has a monocline type structure.
19 wells have been drilled in a "five spot" configuration on the MARIENBRONN pilot project.
The production equipment for the project comprises feed water processing units, a steam generator, separation and storage tanks and a plant for treating oily waters. After purification, the production waters are discharged into a well in the geological stratum.
