DEVELOPT. OF AN EXPERT SYSTEM FOR THE INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, REASSESSMENT/DAMAGE MONITORING OF STEEL OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

Obiettivo

The objective of this project is to develop a prototype expert system for the Inspection, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) of defects as well as their subsequent management on offshore structures. The PC based expert will provide a unique structured environment in which the multi-disciplinary team responsible for the above tasks can operate more efficiently. This increase in efficiency results in a more cost effective defect inspection and management programme for offshore structures. The expert system by virtue of its flexibility, will allow better understanding of structural behaviour and results in optimal decision making methodologies for the inspection, assessment and subsequent management of defects on offshore structures. The defects considered include damage caused by fatigue, corrosion, supply vessel collision, dropped objects and design omissions. The modular design of the system enables customisation of the system to the requirements of a particular operator.
Despite a slippage of about fourteen months in the project schedule during the transfer of the project from the Steel Construction Institute. BOMEL have recovered a significant part of the development time that was lost. The original proposal for the expert system has been revised due to the application of new technology in the field of reliability analysis and computer software.
The use of reliability theory will enable the expert system to assess the degree of uncertainty of various pieces of data it receives and predict the consequence on the performance of the structure. In order to accelerate the calculation and simulation processes, system identification theory from Control Engineering has also been used.
The natural language processing suggested in the original proposal has evolved into a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to allow the user to enter data in a more natural manner.
The results of the project demonstrate the significant increase in efficiency achieved in the inspection, Repair and Maintenance (IRM) of offshore structures.
The design and development of expert system software has demonstrated that the technology and tools currently available have matured sufficiently to allow a rapid integration of this expert system into current IRM practice.
With further development and testing, it is expected that this project will make a significant contribution to the European and worldwide oil and gas industry.
The expert system is geared towards both the collation and the correlation of inspection data, results from previous analyses and other data pertaining to the history of the structure with a view towards gauging the structural performance of the structure during its remaining operational life.
The system is called AMaDeOS, which is a shortened form for Assessment and Management of Defects on Offshore Structures. AMaDeOS primarily uses an expert shell for the storage, retrieval and correlation of the data from the inspection and structural knowledge bases. The shell is augmented with various routines written in C. Based on the conclusions and the recommendations of the user, the shell then communicates with a coupling expert. This module then decides on the appropriate engineering analyses to perform and prepares the relevant data files in the appropriate format. The analyses are then performed and the results are post-processed and relayed back to the knowledge bases. The analysesmodules are written in C and Fortran.
The overall scope of work for the development of the complete system was as follows :
- Literature survey of existing theory and software
- System specification including definition of system architecture, modules,
software and hardware to be used
- Construction of sample knowledge bases for initial system development
- Implementation of updating facility for knowledge bases constructed above
- Development of dialogue/query modules
- Design of reliability based scheduling system
- Definition of operator requirements and selection and/or development of
engineering software
- Design and development of the coupling expert
- Interfacing the coupling expert with the engineering software
- Selection and implementation of scenarios for testing reliability software
- Completion of working prototype and preparation of report and manual.
