USE OF BUOYS TO REDUCE STATIC AND DYNAMIC TENSION IN DEEP WATER MOORING LINES : A PILOT STUDY

Objective

To develop a theory for optimizing the size and the location of buoys in mooring lines in 1000 meter water depth, validated by scaled tests in 20-30 meter water depth.
The procedure allows a safer design of mooring lines in deepwater.
The project has been carried out within the frame of the scope of work subdivided by following tasks :
- Preparation of the study
- Design cables and buoys for optimal perforomance
- Preparation of pilot testing
- Data processing
- Development of optimization theory
- Implementation of results
Tests have been carried out successfully.
The results have allowed to validate the method.
The method is available for commercial purposes at the National Technical University of Athens and at Tecnomare S.p.A. Venice.
