Objectif Design, manufacture and testing of a tethered one-man submersible capable of performing sophisticated tasks on hydrocarbon drilling /production installations in water depths up to 1,500 metres.Problem areas relating to the hull, tether deployment system and manipulators were defined and resolved. In the case of the manipulators the second stage of a planned three-stage development has produced a viable tool which may be operated by a single joystick control and uses sea water as its hydraulic fluid.Initial tests of a dual control system have been successfully completed. This enables the vehicle to be remote-controlled from the surface for performance of simple tasks or where hazardous conditions might prevail.Three areas of technical innovation related to hull design, underwater deployment system, and the manipulators. A further area of innovative design related to the adaption of the vehicle for optional remote control.
